The Marshall-St. Mary’s University Marathon is dedicated to bringing the HealthierUS Initiative to the area. Exercise is a key component of this and we want everyone to take part in this event either as a runner, walker, or volunteer.
- Half-marathon run (this may be walked)
- 5K Competitive Run/Walk
The entry fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to future years (and note that there are no EXCEPTIONS!).
Runners must be 18 years old on the day of the Marathon; 15 years old on the day of the Half Marathon (with guardian/parent signature). Age requirements are based on regulations by IMMDA-International Marathon Medical Directors Association. If you do not meet the age requirement but believe that you are qualified to participate please contact email@example.com. Each case is reviewed by the race medical director. Type “Age Waiver” in the subject line and include runners name, address, email, age on race day, race distance in which runner wants to participate, how runner plans to train/prepare for the event and the reasons why the runner believes that he/she is qualified to participate. The information will be provided to the race medical director.
Start time for all events is 7:00 a.m. with the exception of the 5k. The start time for the 5k is 7:15 a.m.
The start location for the Marathon and all other related events is in front of the stadium on 3rd Avenue, 21st Street.

The course is flat and fast and USATF certified. It is a perfect course to run to qualify for Boston. Runners start on 3rd Avenue next to Joan C. Edward Stadium and run through downtown Huntington past Pullman Square, next to the Ohio River, and through Ritter Park among other places. The highlight is to run through Marshall University campus on their way to a goal-line finish in Marshall Football Stadium.
For the safety and enjoyment of all event participants, the courses are restricted to registered runners/walkers and official race personnel only.
No dogs, no strollers, no baby joggers, no bikes, no inline skates, roller skates (other than official Bike EMS and Patrol Teams) will be allowed on the course.
Violaters will be disqualified and escorted from the course by race officials.
For the safety of all, the use of headphones is discouraged.
There is a six hour time limit! Runners who do not cross the twelve mile marker by 3:15 will be directed to the half marathon finish.
Footballs will be available to carry in the final 100 yards if desired!
This course is also very spectator friendly and we will have race maps available with city maps for your friends and family to follow.
NOTE – this was certified in 2012. The new course has about 3 miles of crushed limestone on it around Ritter Park. It is very fine and packed very well so that the course remains fast. There is no need for trail shoes, etc because of this.
We have a limited amount of flowers that are handed out as you enter campus (at Old Main on Hal Greer Blvd. and 4th Avenue, just beyond the 25 mile mark). This is a memorial for the plane crash victims from November 14th, 1970 (the subject on which the movie We are Marshall was made). Those taking the flower are asked to put this in a basket 200 yards away at Memorial Fountain.
6 hours for all events. For safety and insurance reasons there are no early starts. Registered marathon participants who are slower than 3 hours and 15 minutes at the 12 mile marker will be directed to the finish line for the half marathon. This is a safety issue. Those participants who feel they will take longer than 6 hours should be prepared that police support and aid stations will not be available past this pace (approximately 13:45 min/mile). You will proceed at your own risk.
All full marathon registrants (those participating in the full 26.2 mile race) who enter by August 31st will get a Unisex sized full-zip jacket made by Asics!! If you are a lady and requesting either a unisex jacket or shirt please take into consideration the size difference. Women who pre-register prior to September 1st will have the option of requesting a women’s cut shirt. All entries after September 1st will receive unisex shirts. October 1st is the deadline to guarantee shirt and shirt size.
Additional shirts will be available at packet pickup, on a first-come-first-serve basis for those who register after October 1st. We will make every attempt to meet everyone’s request but we do encourage you to register early. Everyone also gets a unique finisher’s medal, which is specially designed for the event in a 3D format. Half-marathoners who register prior to September 1st will be allowed to register for a Unisex sized zip-up jacket for a surcharge of $37.00 ($65.00 Value).
5K COMPETITIVE RUN/WALK
- Start line for 5k is the same as the marathon.
- Start time for 5k is 7:15 a.m.
- The 5k course will take you through the MU campus.
- Finish line will be the same as the marathon/half-marathon inside the stadium.
- All finishers will receive a medal unique to the MUM.
- 5k runners/walkers will head east on 3rd Avenue and turn right on 27th street and then turn right again on 5th Avenue. They will proceed on 5th Avenue until turning right at the Student Union. They will turn right at the memorial fountain (water stop). They will continue east through campus until they exit at 20th street. They will turn left on 20th street and right on 3rd Avenue. They will proceed east on 3rd Avenue until 22nd street where they will turn right and continue down the east ramp of the football stadium and toward the finish line.
- This is a timed event for all 5k participants.
All finishers in each of our three events will receive a commemorative medal unique to the MUM.
Awards are given to the first 3 finishers overall in all races. Age group awards are given only in the marathon and the half. The age group categories are:
- Under 20
- Over 70 (half & full for both male & female)
Awards for the 5k will be limited to the first 3 finishers in male and female category.
Awards for the 5k year will be announced starting at 8:15. Awards for the half-marathon will be announced at 9:30 Awards for the marathon will be announced at 10:30
The event staff of the Marshall University Marathon will do everything we can to make this a memorable experience for you and your loved one. We are runners as well and we know the sacrifice and dedication entailed for you to reach and cross the finish line. Awards must be picked up by the conclusion of event or otherwise forfeited.
Shipping of Awards
We do not ship awards. Our awards are Blenko glass and while beautiful they are fragile. It is the responsibility of the runner to claim his/her award prior to leaving the stadium. All awards not claimed by the end of race day will be returned to Blenko for credit the following day.
The race will be timed using ChronoTrack disposable tags attached to your bibs. You must wear your bib number on the front of your clothing so that we can see and record your number as you cross the finish line. The race bibs should be unaltered and not covered by any garment. Check the information on your packet label to make sure it is correct. If not, notify a race official at packet pickup. There will be timing mats at the start, 6.1, 13.1, 19 mile markers as well as at the finish line.
We welcome and encourage all walkers and runners to participate in our events. The Half-marathon may be walked. Please be aware there is a 6-hour time limit. We have incorporated the 5k Run/Walk in our list of events and this is a timed competitive run/walk. 5k runners and walkers will start at 7:15. They will finish in the Marshall University Stadium. There will be prizes and official timing for this event.
There is no bag check for the Marshall-St. Mary’s University Marathon due to liability concerns. The start and finish line are separated by mere yards. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. The parking lot is next to both start and finish lines.
